John F. Bankes, Co-Chair
Founder & Managing Director, Artemis Management Group Inc.
John has built a successful career, first, as a partner with a thriving legal practice focusing on corporate finance, securities regulation and M&A. And, second, as an investment banker targeting the capital needs and growth ambitions of emerging growth companies. John is also a keen student of new trends in governance in both the private and public sectors and in non‐profit organizations.
From his early days as a student at York University, John has involved himself in a wide variety of non‐profit causes. His passions include health care, the performing arts, the visual arts, and other culture‐based organizations.
More recently, John has concentrated his volunteerism on health care (Scarborough and Rouge Hospital Foundation), the environment (the David Suzuki Foundation), historical interpretation (Fort Ticonderoga), and the numerous charities launched by an important role model, HRH The Prince of Wales.
There are several important attributes or gifts that John brings to the non‐profit cause that he aligns himself with. First, John is an unbridled optimist. He is successful at drawing out positive emotions in other people such as hope and compassion. This optimism tends to reverse the physiological effects of the strains and stresses of the real world.
Second, while philanthropy to John means a lot more than giving money, he does believe in asset reallocation ‐ people should give not only of their time and ideas but also of their resources. There are a number of non‐profit organizations ‐ universities, hospitals and museums ‐ that have benefitted from the fact that fundraising is an activity that comes naturally to John.
And finally, John has repeatedly demonstrated his willingness ‐ if the situation demands it ‐ to push well beyond his comfort zone in his leadership roles with non‐profit organizations. John has been recognized for his academic achievement and for his contribution to society with a number of awards, prizes, and medals.
