When the COVID-19 pandemic touched down in Scarborough, no one was certain what this might mean for our hospitals, health care providers and patients. But as they do day in and day out, our frontline heroes stepped up to the plate to care for the community, ushering Scarborough Health Network (SHN) through some of the highest case volumes in Ontario.
At the same time, generous donors rallied behind our physicians and staff to support them in their work – donors like DOM International. The Scarborough-based seafood importer and distributor made a $25,000 donation to SHN’s COVID-19 Emergency Fund at the height of the pandemic’s initial wave, providing much-needed help in purchasing medical equipment during a time of great strain on our resources.
“This donation represents a huge thank you to all Scarborough Health Network frontline workers for the countless hours and hard work you have committed to keeping our families and communities safe throughout this pandemic and over the years,” shared DOM International President Domenic Porporo about the gift.
Established more than three decades ago right here in Scarborough, DOM International has grown and flourished within the community, with many of their employees living in the area as well. With their operations largely unaffected by COVID-19, they decided to do their part to help others in the fight against the virus.
“To keep our employees and the community safe, we implemented preventive measures, such as expanding our health and safety protocols, however we knew there was even more we could do,” continued Porporo. “SHN’s frontline workers are vital to the keeping the community safe, and we wanted to both recognize and support the important work being done.”
DOM International’s support helped SHN Foundation raise more than $2.7 million in COVID-19 relief since March 2020. This generosity has been mobilized across our hospitals, securing ventilators, ultrasounds, vital signs monitors, thermometers, PPE supplies and much more.
“We are so grateful for the support of DOM International, particularly during these challenging times for our hospital and frontline workers,” shared Alicia Vandermeer, President & CEO, SHN Foundation. “As a community hospital, it is inspiring to see a local Scarborough business leader step forward to ensure we have what we need to care for the community through COVID-19. These partnerships are so important to overcome not only our current challenges, but to set us up for a brighter, healthier future.”
As a final message to SHN’s frontline staff, Porporo concluded by saying “thank you for the risks every one of you takes, every day, to keep all of us safe and healthy. We have been a part of the community for more than 30 years – it is where our company was founded, where we call home, and where our families thrive. We are grateful to you every day and support all you do. We are in this together.”
