Greer and Hilda’s donations will help Scarborough families for years to come
When Greer Elcombe and Hilda Simon-Elcombe think about what Scarborough Health Network (SHN) means to them, they think in lifecycles.
Both Greer and Hilda have spent almost all of their adult lives in Scarborough. When life threw curves and the family needed care, the family turned to SHN.
Greer had a seizure in his forties and, more recently, had both his hips replaced. This past year, while fighting cancer, Hilda spent five months at SHN. She says the hospital staff added 20 years to her life: “I wouldn’t have gotten better without them.”
When they talk about SHN, both Hilda and Greer talk about trust. They trust the team at SHN to care of them, and they see the bond between a hospital and its community as trust too.
Greer has been giving to SHN Foundation every year since 1998. He has also named SHN Foundation as a beneficiary of his life insurance policy. This year, Hilda gave her first major gift to the Foundation, in the form of securities.
Reflecting on his family’s philanthropy, Greer thinks of other families in Scarborough. “The hospital has provided great health care to me and my loved ones,” he explains. “We want to make sure our community receives the same top notch care in the years to come.”
