For dozens of young patients at Scarborough Health Network, the holidays came early thanks to a surprise delivery of presents from the members of United Association Local 46. This generous donation, which included more than 100 gifts for children of all ages, came as a result of the union’s annual holiday party, where a surplus of presents gave them the opportunity to give back – and they could think of no better home for these toys than with SHN’s paediatric patients.
“With an office on Warden Ave., many of our members live and work in the Scarborough community, meaning that they and their families often benefit from the amazing care offered at Scarborough Health Network,” shared Eddy Panetta, UA Local 46 Business Representative. “This toy donation was our way of giving back to a cause that is vital to our community while also putting some smiles on the faces of those kids who need it most during the holidays.”
Panetta and his colleague Brendan Taylor served as ambassadors for UA Local 46 when they arrived with two truckloads of toys to be handed out to young patients at all three hospitals. During their visit (pictured above), they had the chance to meet eight-year-old Mariam, a patient at SHN’s General hospital, and give her an early Christmas present alongside SHN Foundation’s President and CEO Michael Mazza and Child Life Specialist Michele Clark-Ward.
“We are incredibly grateful to UA Local 46 for these gifts, which will no doubt help make the holidays a little brighter for young patients going through trying times,” says Mazza. “It’s inspiring to see our community stand up in support of our patients and to help them have the best experience possible.”
