For Dr. Dhun Noria, Chief of Laboratory Medicine and Medical Director of Laboratories, the staff and physicians at Scarborough Health Network are a family. “Like many of [my colleagues], I spend most of my waking hours working in Scarborough. Through many years in this community, people that have started out as co-workers and colleagues have now become friends. And as I spend so much of my time with these friends, they have become my extended family.”
It was this feeling of “family” that inspired Dr. Noria to recently take a leading role in SHN’s ongoing Family Campaign, generously donating $5,000 towards our $5-million goal. With $2.6 million raised to date, and many others like Dr. Noria doing what they can to contribute, the Family Campaign is an important source of support for the infrastructure, equipment and ideas that will help SHN become Canada’s leading community teaching health network.
Dr. Noria has been a long-time supporter of SHN, with this gift being only the latest in a lengthy history of personal donations amounting to more than $900,000. She spoke with SHN Foundation about her reasons for giving, and the importance of supporting the Family Campaign as a member of the SHN “family.”
“It has been many years since I came to Canada with only $8 in my pocket. In that time, this country has truly become my home, my land, and has given me so many opportunities over the years. I always believed in giving back, always believed that true success comes when we support each other and our community. What better way to give back than to support my community and my extended family.”
The Family Campaign supports SHN’s ongoing, $100-million capital campaign, raising much-needed investment for the following priorities: a new Medical Imaging and Vascular Centre at the General hospital; the redevelopment of SHN’s Emergency Departments at the Birchmount and Centenary hospitals; the Bridletowne Neighbourhood Hub for Chronic Disease Management; and new medical equipment across all three hospitals.
“Scarborough is a large, diverse community with enormous potential. By supporting our three hospitals, we help our community to become healthier, which is critical to our success as individuals, as friends, as family and as a community. Donating to SHN through the Family Campaign is my way of thanking our organization, my friends, my colleagues and my community for years of support, years of friendship and years of opportunities – and it is just one of the many simple ways I choose to give back.”
