At Scarborough Health Network, we often speak of the excellence that makes its home here – and each day, as we continue to build upon this excellence, it is being recognized by our peers and the greater community. As such, it is with a heavy heart that I share that Michael Mazza, President & CEO of Scarborough Health Network Foundation, will be leaving the organization effective July 5, 2019, for a new and exciting opportunity as Executive Vice-President, Leadership Giving with the Canadian Cancer Society.
Michael first joined Scarborough Health Network Foundation in March 2009, and since then has aggressively worked to strengthen donor relations in one of the world’s most diverse communities. His first tagline “Strong Communities Build Strong Hospitals” has played a vital role in educating a largely new Canadian community about the role it plays in having access to great health care and the importance of unity to achieve SHN’s vision of being recognized as Canada’s leading community teaching health network. Now, under the banner of the It’s Our Time campaign, Michael has been instrumental in building an exceptional fundraising program and team that is ready to rally the support necessary to realize the priority projects that will define our future – a healthier future for all of Scarborough.
Through the help of Michael’s diligent efforts over the past ten years, SHN Foundation has built both awareness and support for our cause – and now more than ever, we are poised to continue this work. With a growing cohort of outstanding physicians, staff, volunteers and community partners, our hospitals – Birchmount, Centenary and General – are innovating how we deliver health care to the community, setting an example for hospitals across the province and demonstrating that we are worthy of significant investment. SHN’s leadership in areas such as nephrology, paediatric care, mental health and oncology has distinguished us as a quality care provider of choice for many in Scarborough and beyond. As well, our emerging strengths in numerous fields and some of Ontario’s lowest emergency wait times make it clear that we are ready to take on every challenge and opportunity ahead of us.
Together, we will shape the future of care for our patients.
Please join me in congratulating Michael on this next stage of his journey – we will miss his passion, professionalism and expertise, and wish him all the best.
Michele Varela, SHN Foundation’s VP Philanthropy, will serve as interim President & CEO until a replacement is selected.
