Mario Di Paolo, the district manager of 11 Beer Store locations in Scarborough, knew that when COVID-19 hit, he wanted to do something to help.
“It is so important for us to help the frontline workers because they’ve been doing such an amazing job,” Mario tells us. “We wanted to do a small part ourselves to help out and give back to the community.”
And give back they did. Customers came in droves to drop off their empty bottles and cans, with all proceeds going to support the fight against COVID-19 at Scarborough Health Network.
“We have to come together as a community in times like these,” says Beverly Scoon, store manager at the Ellesmere and Victoria Park Beer Store location. “Our clients are very generous and we did a hard push. Everything was outside, and people just donated – they’re just so willing to help.”
On Friday, October 16, Beverly, Mario, and the staff members at the Ellesmere and Victoria Park Beer Store presented SHN Foundation with a cheque for $55,000 to support urgent and ongoing health care needs in Scarborough during COVID-19. They went on to raise another $16,300 through their bottle return program.
“Scarborough is so special and unique. You can always rely on the people of Scarborough to step up and help,” Mario shared with us.
When asked what makes Scarborough so special and why she gives back, Beverly gave us a simple yet powerful answer – the people. “They’re generous, they’re kind, and they’re just willing to help. You ask and they deliver.”
We are incredibly grateful to the Scarborough community and the local Beer Stores for their generosity as we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, for supporting our frontline heroes.
