The community group previously raised $250,000 in support of urgent needs at Scarborough’s hospitals

The Scarborough Muslim Community has once again stepped up in support of Scarborough Health Network (SHN) Foundation with the announcement of an inspiring $100,000 pledge. Fresh off the heels of fulfilling their previous five-year commitment of $250,000 – which was raised in only two and a half years – the group has again come forward to help SHN’s Birchmount, Centenary and General hospitals.

“Our Muslim Community cares deeply about Scarborough. By reaching our pledge of $250,000 in such a short time period, we showed the entire community how much we’re committed to giving back,” said Asad Chowdury, one of the leaders of this initiative. “When we come together in support of something as important as health care in Scarborough, it shines a light on the generosity and spirit of the entire community.”

While in previous years, the Muslim Community has hosted a Family Day Walk-a-Thon to raise funds, due to COVID-19 restrictions, they instead held a virtual meeting on February 16, 2021. Joined by SHN Foundation members, local MPs and MPPs, and Toronto Mayor John Tory, they announced their renewed commitment to raising $100,000 for SHN in 2021.

“We continue to be inspired and humbled by the tremendous amount of support the entire Scarborough Muslim Community has shown to our hospitals,” shared Alicia Vandermeer, President and CEO of SHN Foundation. “This continued support truly shows the passion and hard work of the Scarborough Muslim Community. This gift will allow us to continue shaping the future of care for our Scarborough patients and families by funding equipment and enhancements to our facilities, and addressing the many needs facing our hospitals.”

The Scarborough Muslim Community hopes to reach its $100,000 goal by the end of 2021. SHN Foundation is extremely grateful for the support of donors like the Scarborough Muslim Community for their generosity and for helping ensure that our hospitals receive the support necessary to improve patients’ lives through exceptional, world-class, inclusive care.

“This community support is crucial to our hospital’s ability to care for the community, and we are extremely appreciative to the Scarborough Muslim Community for stepping up once again to support our hospitals,” said Ryan Baillie, Vice President, Community Development with SHN Foundation. “Their commitment to helping us build a brighter, healthier future for Scarborough is inspiring. The Scarborough Muslim Community has set an example for other community groups in Scarborough to follow as we rely heavily on our community to help raise valuable funds for SHN.”
