Messages from our SHN frontliners

Your tremendous support for Scarborough Health Network Foundation throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has been nothing short of incredible, and we are so grateful to you for stepping up in our time of need. In the last few months, the Scarborough community and beyond gave at record-breaking levels, with thousands of donors pouring in to support our community hospitals.

To publicly thank and recognize you, our outstanding donors, we've collected over a hundred messages from our SHN frontliners to further demonstrate the impact of your support in the face of great challenges. Thanks to you, Scarborough patients and families can rest assured that their hospitals will care for them - past COVID-19 and long into the future.

That we are not forgotten; that our work during this pandemic is recognized and appreciated.

The community support is very much appreciated! So often, we are reminded of the thanks for the work we are doing through all of the generosity towards our wonderful hospital staff. Jeanette McNeill, Physiotherapist

I am so thankful for all of the community support to our hospital and to me as an individual since COVID19 took over our hospital world. Shows of support by those who drove around the hospital honking their horns, letters of encouragement and support, many meals donated by companies, donations of PPE and other gifts we have received have been such an encouragement. We are in this together and I am so thankful to have such a supportive community to work in during this very trying time!! I am also VERY thankful for those grocery stores that allowed front-line workers to bypass the long lines when needing to get groceries on the way home from work. Being both physically and emotionally exhausted at times, it was so comforting to know that I didn't need to wait in a long line to try and get groceries...thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Pamela Paul, NUC-Birchmount -Emergency Dept.

From the donation of meals, practical everyday essentials (e.g. soaps and etc), I think it is really the recognition and thoughtfulness by the donors of the SHN team's efforts and dedication towards combatting the COVID-19 pandemic while providing best possible care for both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients that's greatly appreciated.

Evangelia Apostolatos, Physiotherapist

The support and generous donations from the many supporters have brought feelings of relief and a  feeling of gratitude to me and my family. To know that I had some food to bring home after a long week, one less meal to cook, made the day a little brighter for me and my husband. For the spouse at work or the spouse working from home, helping with homework and learning to navigate google classroom, it made the end of the day just a little more palatable.

Thank you for thinking of us and for your generous donations!

Jasmine Tse, Nurse Manager

connection and how we all need each other to keep all those we love safe

Agnes Cabansag, Registered Nurse

The community support is helpful by giving us strength to do our duties as health care workers.  When people are participating to keep the virus away (i.e. wearing mask and physical distancing) means there's hope on the horizon that we are going to get better and hopefully will go back to normal economically and socially.

Heather Goodchild, Medical Laboratory Technologist

I love that MLSE is not only donating these meals to Healthcare workers who are still luckily employed but also donating many meals to Food Banks and people who lost there jobs and really need the extra help right now.

Jane Arnold, Registered Nurse

Community cares, and is with us

How have these donations directly affected you or your colleagues?

Chris J, ICU Physiotherapist

For me, it has been the surprise meals which make going home a lot easier! For my colleagues, it has meant caps and masks.

Erica Kang, Patient Care Coordinator

It reminds us all in health care why we were called to do what we do: to care for those who cannot care for themselves, to help those in need and to bring light into a darkened room. Although the past few months have been tough, the various donations have encouraged us to keep trekking forward, to not give up.

Evangelia Apostolatos, Physiotherapist

For me the donations felt like they took our minds away from a somewhat tense and stressful day, if not for a moment, and brought a smile to my face. The letters from the children in P.E.I. made my young children stop for a moment and reflect on the challenges of the COVID-19 situation and appreciate the efforts of the children who write the letters.

Thank you!

Jasmine Tse, Nurse Manager

A moment of relief from stress and anxiety.  We are still employed so we don't have to worry about income, but with all the stresses at work it is a huge relief to have just one thing less to worry about, to not have to be concerned with how to feed ourselves and our families for one night.

Eugenia Dimag, Registered Nurse

It saved us time for cooking and thinking of what to prepare for dinner.

Nariman Razeghpanah, Registered Nurse

In many ways, financial helps us to initiate and maintain the extra expenses which due  to the nature of epidemic has not provided . There were a tremendous amounts needed to provide funds for sterlization , PPE, and so on.

The food, helped many of us to decrease the need for providing meals for the rest of family and consequently decrease the potential harm to our families

PPEs were and are the main needs in order to conquer not only illnesses like SARS and Covid, but also any future and very probable similar events.

Canada, surely has to invest in this regard.

Priya Singh, Administrative Assistant

These donations have been a wonderful token of appreciation to these everyday heros who are doing their best 24/7 to provide fast quality results.

Alice Wong, Registered Nurse

they keep us warm inside and out. keeping us safe within our environment.

Brad Whitehead, Unit Clerk

A lot of the donations were of the food variety.  This was extremely helpful as with the surge in volumes, staff were often taking short breaks or not eating at all.  Having these meals provided means that we could eat on the go as with the delicious samosas or free coffee from La Prep.  Also, to just pop the meals from MLSE in the oven often meant more time we could spend with out family, to focus on them rather than droning on with meal prep, which many were just too exhausted to do.  The care package from PEI was an extremely thoughtful gesture.  It was very touching token and promoted the hospitality the east coast of Canada, and especially PEI, is known for.  The premier there is correct, this is national and global battle, not just one of the provinces.  We need to support each other across Canada and abroad.  This virus knows no boundaries, period.

Registered Nurse

I'm so impressed and humbled by the extraordinary generosity of strangers. I'm more encouraged to continue working hard for my community.

Kayla Myers, CSR

It provided us with meals, when we are too busy to make dinner at home or pick up groceries.

Lynne Wong, Registered Nurse

The emense support through all the donations help keep us encouraged to do what we need to do.

Barb Belcastro, PSW/PSR

Some of us work 8hrs and others work 12hrs so when you are finished with your shift and had to be gowned up (PPE) for that many hours its nice to be able to bring home a cooked meal and not have to worry about what your going to make so you can actually relax for a bit. The other gifts are great as well. They put a smile on our faces because we know that there are people out there that care for us whether they know us or not. Canadians have the BIGGEST HEARTS.

Allison Jocko, Oncology Pharmacy Manager

The feeling of appreciation and recognition during these stressful times clearly lifts moral and spirit of my colleagues.

Jeanette McNeill, Physiotherapist

The donations and shows of community support have been such an encouragement to me and the free meals have been so helpful and appreciated. And I have saved so much time after work, not having to stand in a line to get into a store. I am so, so appreciative to Loblaws,SDM,No Frills for this perk which was a BIG help to me!!

To the province of P.E.I. Your donations made me remember the beauty of your province we saw and experience when we travelled there a few years ago with the family. The gift bags were very thoughtfully curated to reflect the many things your province has to offer. I greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for thinking of us!

Jasmine Tse, Nurse Manager

there was many long hours at the hospital, getting food for ourselves was not at the top of our list of caring for ourselves, and when i received a meal, it would be that much needed hug and nourishment (that i myself didn't know i needed) to finish the day and come back the next day

Eugenia Dimag, Registered Nurse

It's so nice to know that someone out there actually care &  think about frontline workers.  Thank you very much & please stay safe.

Myself and a college went to a restaurant to see if they would donate some meals to help the front line staff OR, Day surgery. The restaurant is called TWICE AS NICE the chefs name is CRAIG. He was absolutely wonderful and jumped at the opportunity to help and feed 40 staff. Craig also went the extra mile and called Gary Rochester to see how the meals went. When Gary told him it was fantastic but stated that 2 people did not receive the man went out of his way the next day and dropped off 2 more meals to ensure all received a meal.

Nariman Razeghpanah, Registered Nurse

Every night before bed I would read the notes from the schoolchildren which inspirited me and put a smile on my face and ease my mind, gave me peace  knowing  you cared.  These notes allowed me to have a good night sleep, which helped me gain strength to look after our community in these trying times.

Alice Wong, Registered Nurse

on days that we are too busy at work and very tired by the time we get off, we have food to bring home and share with our family.

Registered Nurse

During the Emergency Measures Act for the pandemic, I was scared and frightened, working long hard hours with little breaks, little resources for my family, and to receive a warm dinner, a snack, gift bags with treats, and thank you cards, just made me think of all the families outside of work and humbled me to be grateful for everyone working and supporting each other during this scary time.  Thank you for giving me hope when I needed it. <3

Dear SHN donor,

It warms our heart to send this letter to say THANK you for your incredible support to our three SHN hospitals and several satellites. At our daily huddle, we talk about our daily activities, challenges and plans for the week. We end huddle with celebrations and we are so glad to acknowledge the very kind donations and letters/cards that come to our teams. We have posted many of these messages on our huddle board so that it’s a constant reminder of all the community support. We come to work each day to support our patients and it’s great to know that there is so much community support for us! Thank you!

Geleta Ansebo, Clinical Practice Leader

We were all very touched and some even cried by the efforts of our first responders and the community who came out displaying various thank you posters while driving around our hospital.
