Like many of his members at Carpenters Local 27, President Mike Yorke was born and raised in Scarborough, and has a desire to see it prosper for future generations. And thanks to the work of the team at Scarborough Health Network Foundation, he is now doing his part to make that happen.
Over the past year, the Foundation has built a strong relationship with Mike, who then identified Claudio Mazzotta, Vice President of Drywallers Local 675, as they have a shared belief that improving health care in Scarborough is one of the strongest ways for their respective unions to show their commitment to the community. As a demonstration of this joint commitment, the unions have pledged a combined $150,000 in support for the new Medical Imaging and Vascular Centre at SHN’s General hospital.
“It’s all about giving back to the community,” shared Yorke about the recent gift. “We are committed to equity and social justice, not just in our own union, not just in the communities in which our members live and work, but throughout Canada and internationally as well. This gift in support of Scarborough’s patients is a demonstration of this commitment, and, together with the Drywallers and SHN, a step forward in building the future of health care for our community.”
The new Medical Imaging Centre will be a state-of-the-art, fully accessible, 36,000 sq. ft. space that will allow patients greater, more efficient access to all diagnostic imaging services within a single location. This includes suites for CT scans, nuclear medicine, breast imaging, MRI and ultrasound, as well as a centralized registration area. Overall, the new Centre will increase capacity, reduce wait times, modernize technology, enhance continuity of care, and provide a more accessible and comfortable setting for patients, families, staff, and physicians.
